Weekend Introduction to TEFL

Our Weekend TEFL Intro is a fun and exhilarating introduction to the world of TEFL. Its aim is to equip you with the confidence you need to take your first steps into teaching English.

The course may be short (two 9 hour days) but it will cover a lot of ground in some depth. So hold onto your hats as it's going to be a rollercoaster ride!

What to expect

First, we will explore some of the ways in which the brain processes language. This will give us a basis for understanding what's going on in a language learner's head when they're in your classroom. If you've ever had the experience of trying to learn a new language then you'll know all about the mental challenges of operating in another tongue.

We'll also look at some of the techniques that teachers of English as a foreign language use and we'll answer some basic questions such as:

  • How can you teach English without using your students' first languages?
  • How do you correct students' pronunciation?
  • What kinds of activities should we give students?
  • How do you get students working collaboratively?
  • What effect does the learning environment have?

The course is highly interactive and includes many practical exercises, giving you a real chance to develop your teaching skills. Topics covered include:

  • Language, and how the brain deals with it
  • Grammar and how to teach it
  • How to introduce new language to students
  • Teaching Pronunciation
  • Classroom observation and feedback
  • Why students make mistakes and how to correct them
  • A 'micro' teaching practice session
  • Designing and using language activities

Home study

On a short course there's a lot to digest, so you will be required to do some reading, on the first evening of the course. Details can be found on your timetable which you'll be given when you arrive, but comprises one reading, one research task (normally grammar related) and a short (3 minute) presentation to prepare for day two of the course.

Other benefits

Our Weekend Introduction to TEFL tends to attract a really interesting bunch of people. Therefore it’s a great opportunity to meet and network, as well as find out about jobs all around the world.

Course Fact Sheet Download

Who is this course for?

We call this our volunteers course, as it’s designed to give you just enough teaching knowledge to work on short-term community project overseas. We obviously can’t turn you into a fully-fledged teacher in just a weekend, but you’ll gain enough knowledge to set you on your way. It’s ideal if you’re thinking of financing a gap-year or year-off by teaching conversation classes overseas, for example. We hope it might also inspire you to take one of our longer courses.

What is the qualification?

At the end of the weekend TEFL Intro, you will receive a certificate that you can show to potential employers.
